Every practice, faith tradition, and exploration into new territories requires a community – either partners in the journey or allies who support one’s efforts. Practical theology as well as theological reflection have many resources and partners. Here I name a few. Some are resources directly related to the academic field of Practical Theology and others are resources I have found helpful on my own journey of reflection and belief.
The Association of Practical Theology promotes “critical discourse that integrates theological reflection and practice.” Through participation on the annual American Academy of Religion meetings and in larger conversations which colleagues in the fields of religion and society, APT promotes deeper exploration of the themes within practical theology. The site lists fellowship, calls for papers, and other resources for professionals interested in broadening their study of practical theology.
A full list of Practical Theology professional associations can be found here.
International Journal of Practical Theology is the academic journal of this discipline.
Many universities offer advanced degrees in Practical Theology including Vanderbilt University, Princeton Theological, and Boston University. See a full list of programs here.
Pacific School of Religion and the Graduate Theological Union offer degrees in ministry as well as a variety of theological disciplines, including Liturgical Studies and Christian Spirituality.
Sara Nesson is a Jewish and interfaith leader who offers interfaith and Jewish weddings as well alternative Jewish practices geared towards reflection, imagination, and life-cycle rituals.
Monastery of St. Gertrude and their retreat center, The Spirit Center, offer retreats and experiences of prayer, monasticism, art, and community. This monastery has been important to me in my spiritual and religious journey, and there are many other monasteries and retreat centers that offer a ministry of quiet, prayer, and reflection.
